Ian Mastin was born in Leicestershire, England, and as a child moved with his family to Queensland, Australia.

It during was the mid 1980's when sketching for recreation, Ian was invited to exhibit his work in a Brisbane gallery. In 1991 he returned with his Scottish-born wife and their children to Britain, settling in East Lothian. It was here that again he was drawn back to his art, and after a year of experimentation in fundamental techniques, committed himself to painting full-time.

Realizing early in his career that traditional still life painted in acrylics would give him the direction he had been seeking, he rapidly developed, along with an obvious excellence in technique, a strong passion for this chosen genre.

Though he gains inspiration from numerous sources such as the Dutch and Flemish Masters of the 17th Century, his work also suggests a timeless quality that is not bound by tradition or convention.

In particular, Ian enjoys working with items of simple utilitarian use - the detritus of life from earlier generations - a sense of appreciation in reflecting upon old, used everyday objects which may have little intrinsic value other than have a strong attachment to an intimate past.

Ian exhibits regularly throughout Scotland, England and now again, Australia, though his paintings with their obvious appeal are found in collections throughout the world.
